SABR Diamond Dollars Case Competition – March 2023 and 2024

In March 2023 and 2024, I competed on teams with 4 other Rice students in the SABR Diamond Dollars Case Competition.

In 2024, I served as team captain and was responsible for forming and organizing the team to compete in this year’s competition. Our task was to analyze the value of a foul ball based on the situation in which it was hit. To do so, we built a pitch quality model to estimate the expected value of each pitch. We then compared the run value of each foul ball in each situation with the expected value of the pitch, and made a series of adjustments based on factors such as ballpark and the number of successive foul balls in a plate appearance. We won our group of the competition once again, and finished as overall runner-up for the second year in a row.

In 2023, We were tasked with analyzing the impact of incorrect ball-strike calls in selected MLB games and creating an alternative final score for each game. To accomplish this, we built a Markov Chain model trained on the 2022 MLB season that allowed us to simulate an MLB game from any given starting state. Our project was named the winner of our section of the competition and runner-up overall. Our team was also invited to present our project to the Houston Astros R&D Department upon returning to Houston.

Rice Club Baseball – September 2021 – present

I play on the Rice Club Baseball Team, a competitive college baseball team that plays several dozen games per year across the state of Texas. We hold 1-3 practices per week and play a series of games on 8-10 weekends per year. Our team competes in the Great American Division in Division II of the National Club Baseball Association. We also play tournaments and exhibition games outside of our league’s regular season schedule. During my Sophomore season, I was the team’s starting center fielder. I was named 1st Team All-Region and 2nd-Team All-American for the NCBA Division II. We are a self-run team lead by upperclassmen captains who organize all team logistics. Since the start of my Sophomore year, I have been serving as the club’s treasurer and co-president.

Our website is a bit outdated but still contains relevant information about our club:

Rice Undergraduate Finance Club – January 2022 – December 2022

I was a member of the Rice Undergraduate Investment Fund (RUIF). As a freshman, I applied and was accepted into the club’s training program. At weekly meetings, we learn about financial concepts including accounting, investment banking, and stock analysis. At the end of the semester, all freshmen complete a stock pitch to the club’s board. If they perform well, they will be selected to join the Rice University Investment Fund as an analyst. RUIF members can choose how to invest real money into stocks to help their portfolios succeed. During my Sophomore year, I served a Junior Analyst in the Financials, Industrials, and Basic Materials sector.

New Trier Knights Club Baseball – May 2018 – August 2021

I was a founding member and 4-year team captain of the New Trier Knights Club Baseball team. My friends and I started the Knights as a more casual alternative to elite, pay-to-play summer club teams in our community for high school players. We played in the CSYBA, a travel league made up of teams from the the city of Chicago and its suburbs. With some assistance from our adult team manager, my fellow captain and I ran the team ourselves. We organized practices, communicated scheduling and logistical information, and managed the team during games. I played on this team for my four summers in high school, and thoroughly enjoyed all of the fun and responsibility I had.

New Trier DECA Club – September 2018 – May 2021

In high school, I was very involved in my school’s DECA chapter. DECA is an international student business organization that aims to develop the business leaders of tomorrow. For my school’s chapter, I was on the Leadership Board my junior year and was the Vice President my senior year. I was responsible for organizing meetings, recruiting new members, and preparing club members for competitions. At these competitions, we would present our solution to a case study in front of a judge after 10 minutes to prepare. I won the following awards at competitions:

-Sophomore Year: 1st place in Marketing Exam at Area Competition

-Junior Year: 2nd place overall in Entrepreneurship at Area Competition, State Qualifier (cancelled due to COVID)

-Senior Year: 1st place overall in Entrepreneurship at Area, 1st place overall at State Competition, International Finalist (top 20 in World)

New Trier Radio (WNTH) – March 2019 – August 2021

I also got involved with my high school’s radio station. Three friends and I started a live baseball talk show called The Pennant Chase in March of our sophomore year. Once the pandemic hit, we transitioned our show to a streamable podcast called Bases Loaded. We have interviewed guests including MLB Twitter Personalities @CespedesBBQ, White Sox announcers Jason Benetti and Len Kasper, and Cubs pitcher Kohl Franklin. We even went on a baseball road trip in August 2021, where we recorded a new episode each day from the road. In addition to our show, we all announced our school’s varsity baseball games live on the radio.
